History
Amanoiwato Shrine, located in Takachiho-cho Miyazaki Prefecture, enshrines a cave called Amanoiwato. This cave is the location of a Shinto legend, where the deity Amaterasu Omikami hid herself as is written in Japanese mythology (Kojiki, Nihon Shoki). The Nisi Hongu and Higasi Hongu stand on both sides of the Iwato River, and both shrines serve as the enshrinement for Amaterasu Omikami.
